Electricity system
The National Transmission Company South Africa operates the national transmission system, system operation and short-term reliability under the South African Grid Code. NERSA regulates electricity activities, while the Department of Electricity and Energy leads national policy and planning.
Grid context
Large generators connect to the NTCSA transmission network under the Grid Code and NERSA licensing or registration framework. Strong wind and solar resources are concentrated in the Cape provinces, where available transmission capacity is a major development constraint.
