Thailand uses an Enhanced Single Buyer model. EGAT operates the transmission system and national control centre and purchases bulk electricity; MEA and PEA distribute power, the Energy Regulatory Commission regulates the sector and EPPO leads energy policy and planning.
Large generators and small power producers connect to EGAT's transmission system, while smaller generation may connect through the MEA and PEA distribution networks. Pumped storage and hydropower provide flexibility alongside a gas-dominated system and growing variable renewables.
