A Quarter-Century of Transformation: In 2000, UK electricity capacity rested on coal, gas, and nuclear, with renewables barely registering. By 2025, coal has all but vanished and nuclear has contracted, while offshore wind, onshore wind, and solar have grown to dominate a system that has expanded from around 67 GW to over 105 GW. The story here is capacity, not generation, gas still does much of the day-to-day work, but the foundation of the mix has shifted decisively from burning fuel to harnessing wind and sun.
