Electricity system

Privatised, competitive market. National Grid ESO is system operator. Offshore wind procured via Contract for Difference (CfD) auctions — AR1 through AR7. OFTOs own and operate offshore transmission. Crown Estate leases seabed in England, Wales and NI. Crown Estate Scotland in Scotland. Elexon BMRS provides live grid data API.

Grid context

Grid connection is managed by National Grid ESO under the Transmission Entry Capacity (TEC) queue process, which runs separately from and sequentially after planning consent, making it a distinct critical path. Offshore assets are owned and operated by OFTOs (Offshore Transmission Owners) regulated by Ofgem under a competitive tender regime. Queue reform under the TMO4+ programme is underway but connection backlogs remain a significant delivery risk for the offshore pipeline.
